How to right click using the keyboard
agosto 28, 2010

If you hate taking your hands off the keyboard to use a mouse or tracking device, Windows 7 makes things easier by providing more keyboard shortcuts than ever before. You probably already know how to navigate the taskbar and around the screen with the keyboard.
How about when you get to the icon you need, but now you want to right click it? Do you have to resort to the pointing device at that point? Nope! You can bring up the right context menu simply by hitting SHIFT + F10.

How to turn your Win7 computer into a wi-fi hotspot
agosto 21, 2010

Want to share your Win7 computer’s Internet connection with other computers wirelessly? As long as your system’s wireless network adapter supports the new Windows 7 “virtual wi-fi” feature, you can do it. Intel, Broadcom, Realtek and some other NIC makers provide drivers that support this feature; you’ll need to be sure they’re installed. Then do this:

  1. Open an elevated command prompt by right clicking the cmd.exe link and selecting “Run as Administrator.”
  2. In the command window, type: netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=MyNet key=MyPassword (replace “MyNet” with the name you want to use for the wireless network and replace “MyPassword” with your chosen password for accessing it)
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Now type: netsh wlan start hostednetwork
  5. Press Enter.
  6. Open Control Panel and go to Network and Sharing Center.
  7. Click Change Adapter Settings.
  8. Right click your Internet connection and select Properties.
  9. Click the Sharing tab.
  10. Check the box that says “Allow other network users to connect.”
  11. Choose your virtual wi-fi adapter and click OK.

Now wi-fi enabled computers within range should see your new wireless network and others can connect to it if they know the password.

How to configure Windows 7 Pro/Ultimate to search the Internet from Start
agosto 7, 2010

By default, when you search from the Windows 7 Start menu, it only searches your local computer. What if you would like to search both the PC and the Internet from this search box? If you have Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate, you can configure Group Policy to do just that. Here’s how:

  1. Click Start and in the Search box, type gpedit.msc to open the Group Policy Editor.
  2. In the left pane, navigate to User Configuration | Administrative Templates | Start Menu and Taskbar.
  3. In the right pane, double click “Add Search Internet link to Start Menu.”
  4. Select Enable.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Close the Group Policy Editor.

Unfortunately, Windows 7 Home editions don’t support Group Policy.
